De
Daumier-Smith’s Blue Period, by J.D. Salinger
A Review by Christine
Fitzgerald
When the editors of Spillway Review, Area 57, were kind enough to
accept my review of trampolines, they mentioned that they actually had
in mind reviews of literary work, not products. Immediately, one
of my favorite short stories came to mind: De Daumier-Smith’s
Blue Period, by J.D. Salinger. It is in a collection called Nine
Stories, by J.D. Salinger.
I managed to go to a high school where J.D. Salinger was not banned,
and
I enjoyed reading the assigned stories, and I even dug up some that
weren’t assigned, one of which was DeDaumier-Smith’s Blue Period.
It’s about an art correspondence course, and it is very
funny. Unfortunately, I can’t find my copy right now, but I’m
going to track down a copy, and I recommend that you do likewise.
I had been thinking of shunning J.D. Salinger after I read something
about letters from a student with whom he had an affair or
something. Sometimes I boycott books or movies based on the
personal lives of authors or actors. I’m boycotting Woody Allen
for example, although he can be quite funny. In any event I’ve
decided not to boycot J.D. Salinger, and not to look into any more
details
of his personal life, and try to find my copy of De Daumier-Smith’s
Blue Period.
