John Reed Tarver retired as the tenured historian of
the LSU Agricultural Center and now keeps busy researching and writing
about the Southern forest industry. He earned the Ph.D. degree
for his study of labor relations in the early 20th century lumber
industry in the trans-Mississippi South. A veteran print
journalist, he has also taught language arts at the college level,
including journalism and English grammar. He holds memberships in
the History of Science Society and the Society for the History of
Technology. Over the past 25 years he has travelled frequently in
China and Central Asia, visiting agricultural and forestry facilities
maintained by local universities. He also serves as president of
the L&A Trail, Inc., a recreational corridor based on an abandoned
railroad in North Louisiana. He lives in Baton Rouge.
