A Portrait of a Dentist as a Young Man

by Sampson Starkweather

A boy sits in a chair,
a piece of string tied
to his loose tooth.
The other end
carefully wrapped
around a doorknob.
As the clock strikes five
he closes his eyes,
waiting for his mother
to open the door.
