The Mourning Dove

Stanley Anderson

The moment when a mourning dove
suspends its song,
silence fills the air,
as if it were a part of sound,
space throughout a paragraph,
leading between lines,
a point or two.

The prairie waits,
poised for more,
ready for the bird to justify
another line of text.
