REMBRANDT’S NIGHTWATCHMAN SOLILOQUIES  8

by Duane Locke

The crosswalk causes some
To step on the grass,

Attempt to create their own path,
To make it a monument,

But

The grasses growth and girth obliterates
The operation of inspired footsteps
And the possibility of being in histories
Like Egyptian obelisks,
And fossils of mollusks.

I really want a lexicon pertaining
To the subject of lizards.  Apollo
Might attracted Daphne,
If he had continued to play with lizards
Crawling on his legs,
And not became wee by following the “We,”
And seeking
To order the disordered hair of  Daphne.
Daphne
Had a worldview beyond the insular life
Of regulating the coming of dawn
And the arrival of midnight.  She

Was well versed in Pyrronism.

I have disconnected my phone and no longer
Am in such a hurry that I take Polaroid pictures.
I am thrilled
By the ambulatory motions of caterpillars.

I live alone and isolated
In a neighborhood of stolen station wagons.
